	Familia Sancela Familia Sancela tracks finished goods with = Intermec RFID=20 system. Familia Sancela, a personal care products = company,=20 has a well-deserved reputation for innovation. With more than = 3,000=20 customers throughout Latin America and five state-of-the-art = manufacturing=20 facilities in Colombia and Ecuador, the company relies on = technology to=20 streamline its operations and optimize performance. The = company=92s=20 culture of continuous improvement is a key to its success. One = area that=20 recently cried out for attention was tracking pallets of goods as = they=20 moved from production to the distribution center (DC). When = pallets of the=20 finished product were moved, their physical location was tracked = using=20 production reports, which were manually entered into a SAP R3 = system.=20 With Familia Sancela=92s manual system, operators would = count the=20 goods on each pallet to check if it contained the correct amount = of stock=20 according to each SKU (stock keeping unit). The data was then = input=20 manually into the system. With this approach there were = always=20 discrepancies in stock control records, mainly due to human = error=97either=20 when the goods were counted or when the information was input in = the=20 system. Goods go missing In addition, the production = plant and=20 DCs are separated by a passageway that is roughly 5 meters (16.4 = feet)=20 wide. At one end of the site is a warehouse near where a large = number of=20 vehicles park, making it the obvious place for goods to be = moved.=20 However, on occasion goods would go missing. =93Sometimes = we had=20 more goods registered than our actual stock and sometimes we had = less.=20 Either way, our paper stock records were not consistent with = what was=20 shown on our system,=94 said Juan Esteban Jaramillo, group IT = manager.=20 =93What=92s more, we couldn=92t identify the cause of a loss of = goods or=20 discrepancies because we lacked information on who had assembled = the=20 pallet or moved it from one place to another.=94 The = company also=20 lacked information on what goods were ready to be sold. Even when = there=20 was stock available, it would not necessarily show in the system = and so=20 couldn=92t be sold. There were also discrepancies in handling = orders from=20 clients (e.g., 100 boxes were ordered and only 90 were shipped = because the=20 other 10 could not be located). Company managers knew they = needed=20 100 percent accuracy in the transfer of the finished goods from = the=20 production site to the DC, with visibility at all stages. After = examining=20 all options, they chose an RFID system using Intermec = technology=20 implemented by Infotrack, an Intermec partner based in Colombia.=20 =93We chose Intermec because of the proven credibility and = responsibility of their partner in Colombia, Intermec=92s backing = and=20 unlimited support of the project, the status of the brand of RFID=20 technology as a world leader, and lastly, the viability of = their=20 costs,=94 said Elkin Diez, SRM projects manager, Familia Sancela.=20 Compliance versus operational needs While this = decision also=20 offered an additional opportunity=97Colombia=92s leading retailer, = Almacenes=20 =C9xito, was considering asking its suppliers to use RFID = labels=97the company=20 was looking for other benefits from the technology, not just = to change=20 operations to meet its client=92s labeling needs. =93We = wanted to get=20 the most out of this tool and use it for our own benefit,=94 Diez = said. =93We=20 didn=92t want to play a passive role in this technological = upgrade.=94=20 In early 2007, a plan of work was drawn up and on-site = testing=20 began. Once testing of each piece of equipment was completed, = including=20 Intermec RFID IF5 readers with linear antennas, PM4i printers and = RFID=20 labels, more comprehensive testing was conducted to fine-tune the = system.=20 It was also necessary to add a server for the middleware, = a server=20 for the SAP XI module, four cameras with digital sensors, two = warning=20 lights and two barriers that could be raised to allow operators = and pallet=20 through once they were verified. After three months of=20 implementation, the project went live. Automatic = registration=20 With the new RFID system in place, operators now make up a = pallet and=20 take it from the production area to the DC. When the pallet leaves = production, it is recorded in the system along with information = about who=20 assembled it. At the exit, the operator=92s RFID badge is read = along=20 with the pallet tag. The company has a virtual = warehouse=20 where the transfer from production to the DC is monitored at every = stage.=20 If there is no change to the process and the transfer from = production to=20 DC takes less than 60 seconds, the RFID readers capture the = identification=20 of both the employee and the products, validate their entry and = register=20 the goods in the system. One real advantage of introducing = the=20 system was that the operator does not have to wait for validation, = but=20 instead keeps a steady walking pace while the system completes the = necessary processes to allow the goods to keep moving. =93To = maintain=20 the fluidity of the process we used digital sensors,=94 Diez said. = =93To start=20 with, we had tried=97unsuccessfully=97 using 20 analog sensors, = but given that=20 the passageway was outside, it was affected by light and rain, and = the=20 process was constantly failing.
