	CDS Logistics CDS Logistics uses Intermec technology to gain = miles on the=20 competition. CDS Logistics is an 18-year-old transportation = company=20 specializing in the delivery of kitchen cabinets to residential = and=20 commercial locations. CDS manages a network of 31 third-party = logistics=20 providers (3PLs) that deliver products throughout a 33-state = area.=20 Proactively managing those 31-network members requires=20 state-of-the-art systems and leading edge=20 technology. Delivering the cabinets on time and = undamaged is=20 extremely important. If a driver arrives at a job site late or = with a=20 damaged or missing cabinet, it could cause extensive delays to=20 contractors=92 work and is detrimental to the overall customer = experience. To minimize delays and costs to the end customer, = cabinets are=20 rush ordered from the manufacturer, which could postpone other = scheduled=20 CDS deliveries. To enhance the customers=92 experience and = maintain=20 schedules for other CDS deliveries, CDS needed to improve its = shipping=20 process. =93Delivering products late or damaged has a = domino=20 effect on all parties involved,=94 said Steve Burgess, IT manager = of CDS=20 Logistics. =93We needed to improve our processes to ensure = customer=20 satisfaction and maximize profits.=94 To help reduce = shipping=20 errors and improve customer satisfaction, CDS Logistics turned to = Intermec=20 and systems integrator CSSI for an automated solution. The company = deployed Intermec CN2B mobile computers along with a software = solution=20 from CSSI. =93We spoke to several other companies = that offered=20 similar solutions, but they weren=92t quite right for us,=94 said = Burgess.=20 =93CSSI=92s software was tailor made to fit our needs and Intermec = CN2B=20 devices are known for their durability in warehouse environments. = It was a=20 solution that perfectly fit our = needs.=94 Paper-Based=20 Process Prone to Errors Prior to implementing an = automated=20 system, CDS Logistics relied on paperbased solutions. Using the = old=20 system, cabinets were unloaded and stored upon arrival to the CDS=20 warehouse, and the inventory was manually checked against the = packing=20 list. Once an order was ready to be shipped, the cabinets would = then be=20 removed from the warehouse and manually checked off on a piece of = paper=20 before being loaded on the CDS or distribution partner=92s truck. = This=20 system was prone to human error and riddled with=20 inefficiencies. =93The supply chain process was mostly = manual, which=20 presented issues,=94 Burgess said. =93We needed a way to reduce = the number of=20 displaced cabinets, increase the accountability of the drivers and = better=20 document the distribution process. We also had to find a way of = assuring=20 that the right cabinets were getting on the truck and being = delivered to=20 the right location. The paper process just wasn=92t working for us = anymore.=94 Mobile Computers Eliminate Errors = CDS has deployed 311 Intermec mobile computers to its = drivers=20 and warehouse personnel since February 2007. The computers begin = tracking=20 shipments as soon as they leave the manufacturer for the CDS = warehouse by=20 notifying CDS personnel when a truckload of cabinets is en route = to its=20 facility. This notification includes a packing list of the items = included=20 on the order, which comes as an electronic data interchange (EDI) = document=20 and is recorded into the CDS system. This data is then distributed = to the=20 mobile computers so items can be checked in and stored until = it=92s time for=20 delivery. Once there is an order for delivery, the = cabinets=20 are loaded onto a truck. There can be up to 250 trucks each = day=20 delivering a total of 800 different orders a day. Once the = delivery is=20 made, the driver confirms the contents of the order using the = CN2B=20 mobile computer, noting any damaged or missing materials. This = data is=20 then uploaded to the system and is transmitted to the cabinet=20 manufacturer. According to CDS=92 chief financial = officer Bill=20 Kabernagel, CDS reported a 44 percent reduction in shortages = after the=20 implementation of the solution. =93This is the CDS = network=20 all-time low for shortages and it can be attributed to both = scanning and=20 hard work,=94 says Burgess. In addition, CDS not only = saves=20 money because issues with the orders are often resolved on the = spot,=20 but the drivers are also happy because they are able to make = more=20 deliveries and no longer have to deal with = paperwork. =93We=20 have been very pleased with the efficacy of the solution,=94 says = Burgess.=20 =93It has really reduced the amount of errors we were making = while=20 enhancing our value to the customer. It has also enabled us to = bolster the=20 services we are able to provide other customers. We plan to adopt = similar=20 solutions with other customers.=94 Enhanced = Technology=20 Increases Efficiencies Because drivers must pay for = lost or=20 damaged items in their inventory, the new solution also helps = them=20 better track the inventory in their shipments. This expedites the = delivery=20 process and also saves money. =93The solution from = CSSI and=20 Intermec has really empowered the drivers, giving them the = ability to=20 save time when locating missing pieces,=94 says Burgess. =93This = ultimately=20 speeds up the delivery process and allows them to make more = deliveries=20 and fewer mistakes.=94 In addition, the CDS = network=92s increased=20 efficiency, decreased shortages and timely reporting makes it a = more=20 attractive option to other customers. When more customers=92 = products run=20 through the CDS network, it makes the network stronger, = helping CDS to=20 retain their network=92s third party logistics company members = and=20 attract new customers. The bar code system used in = the new=20 solution has also improved the accuracy of the CDS billing = process.=20 With the old system, a network member might have been billed = for an=20 entire order, even if a cabinet was missing. As a result, = research had=20 to be completed to reconcile the billing amount with the number = of=20 cabinets the customer received. =93The new bar code = system=20 enables the CDS customer service department to bill for the exact = number=20 of cabinets delivered,=94 says Burgess. =93Today we need to = research=20 approximately .075 percent of our invoices which is much better = than the=20 amount of research performed with the old=20 system.=94 Ultimately, the value-added solution = developed by=20 Intermec and CSSI has enhanced the services CDS has been able = to offer=20 its customers, giving them an edge over the competition. It = has=20 empowered the drivers while optimizing the distribution = process,=20 putting CDS miles ahead of the competition.
